St. Charles Continuing Medical Education is bringing childhood obesity expert, Dr. Lenna Liu of the University of Washington Children's Hospital in Seattle, to Bend for Grand Rounds on June 25. Dr. Liu has graciously agreed to speak at a community forum June 24 from 4 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. for Kids@Heart community partners and other interested community members. She will be accompanied by a local panel of health care professionals and community partners working to combat obesity in Central Oregon (TBA).
Dr. Lenna L. Liu joined Seattle Children's Hospital in 1995, and is an investigator at the Child Health Institute. Dr. Liu is active in the Children's Obesity Action Team (COAT) and the Seattle-King County Public Health Department's Steps to a Healthier U.S. project. She is involved in the development and evaluation of quality improvement efforts in pediatric overweight, a family YMCA-based healthy lifestyle program, community-based nutrition and physical activity promotion projects, and clinical services for overweight youth. Liu is also co-investigator on the SEARCH for Diabetes in Youth study that examines rates of diabetes, particularly Type 2 diabetes, in children and adolescents.
According to Seattle's Child Magazine, the Children's Obesity Action Team or COAT is receiving national recognition. COAT has been named one of the top six childhood obesity programs in the country by the National Initiative of Children's Healthcare Quality.
